In a race of attrition the Martini racing Porsche 917K driven by Gijs van Lennep and Dr. Helmut Marko scored a deserved victory from the similar JW entered machine of Attwood and Muller. The lightweight magnesium car took the lead in the 13th hour and after crossing the finish for the final time it had covered a total distance of 3315 miles at an average speed of 138 miles per hour, both Le mans records.
